Learn to Run

My name is Kelly Bodie and many of you may have seen our group running along King Street for the past 7 years. I have been a run instructor for 10+ years (I am afraid to actually count the number!) and have been a runner since I was a teen. My goal in teaching this learn to run is not to have you win any races but to develop a more active lifestyle and to enjoy all the benefits this brings.

During the 12 week clinic I will lead you in developing a strong base for running 5K. We will start by walking 2 minutes and running 1 minute. Each week we will increase the running time by 1 minute until we reach 10 minutes running and 1 minute walking. We will go at the pace of the majority of the group and will not increase if the group is not ready to. This method was developed by Jeff Galloway and our own Running Room guru, John Stanton. I believe that with the proper pace most people will enjoy running and develop the muscle fitness to run injury free. The idea of my learn-to-run includes going at a very slow pace until you develop the musculoskeletal strength to support a faster pace.

This run clinic will last 20 minutes and then we will do 10 minutes of stretching. I am a strong believer of post run stretching but will leave that as an option. This clinic will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7am. We leave from the King Street entrance in the Burr Wing.

Prerequisite: Must be able to walk briskly for 20 minutes.

Start date is October 19, 2015. All you need is a good pair of running shoes.
